When you are fitting out a new space, when the current network has been extended repeatedly, or when nobody can say with confidence what is connected to what. At that point adding to it costs more than planning it.

It limits how far a problem can travel. If a camera, a guest laptop or a single workstation is compromised, segmentation is what stops it reaching your business systems.

Accepted Answer

The principle applies at any size. A ten-person office with guest Wi-Fi, cameras and business systems on one flat network has the same exposure as a larger one, just fewer devices.
